Letting Each Color Do Its Work

I’m so grateful that it is a new year, filled with possibilities. I feel a great burst of creative energy

This week I have been working to complete the blue-trees artwork that has developed into an art quilt. It is making me think about color and how it works.

I try hard to use my colors intentionally.

Colors have purpose; I find my work is most effective when I let each color do its job.

Generally, I compose works with one dominant color. I work almost monochromatically through a lot of the creation. Then, I add accents and splashes of (usually) the complement or near-complement.

The dominant color in this work is blue. A blue palette with tree images evokes dreams and memories to me. Although I have added a lot more complexity in monoprinting multiple layers and values in the individual sections, the overall palette reads as blue.

Using MOSTLY one color throughout a work provides unity. Using ONLY one color throughout would just be boring.

In this work, I love the splashes of orange and mustard yellow. Their job is to wake up the blue and make it more lively. (Complementary colors next to each other create a visual “pop.”) Here are the two sections from above next to an orange hue.

I created the tree with the complements of orange and blue. Orange was the underneath color. The tree was formed with a hand-cut stencil on a gelatin printing plate, with some organic grass pieces providing the texture.

Even where the blue overprints the orange, that bit of orange shows through and gives it some depth.

Here is the reverse. I have overprinted orange shapes through a stencil onto a blue background. But the magic ingredient here is not the complement, it’s a little bit of white.

If you put blue and orange (complements) NEXT to each other they each “pop.” If you put orange on TOP of blue, you get mud. The orange is not opaque unless there’s a bit of white mixed in. The white is what has transformed this pure orange into a cantaloupe—like color. White adds opacity.

I also used the opaque quality of white to create the window shape around the tree.

I am enjoying this quilt, but I am also anxious to complete it. My new year energy has stirred up all kinds of ideas of what to work on next.

Wading into the River's Edge... Printmaking Pleasure

July 12, 2020

Yesterday morning… I just got lost in some monotype printing. Not much to say. I had gathered my materials the night before: some blank rice paper to print, some blank fabric to print, and some previously printed fabric to print over. I knew I wanted some grass-like images for a few new wetlands collages. And I let it roll…

Ink the plate. Press. Pull. Maybe press again. Re-Ink.

The original image. The ghost image. Press. Pull. Repeat.

Allow the images to appear.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 Collage-in-progress

Time for a little collage!

This is a festival-prep week for me. I will be in DeLand’s Fall Festival of the Arts this weekend. At my last Festival I was very happy to have a good response to the small, matted collaged pieces I was showing. So, I need more. (What a wonderful problem to have!) Since I will be showing a few large storytelling quilts in DeLand, I want the smaller works I show to be compatible, to look like part of a unified body of work. I have already created some photo transfers that I like. Now it’s time to put them together.

Starting with two elements

The window will be the dominant element in this work. It takes up a good deal of the space. So, the image will actually be about the window. Everything else is to accent the window and tie things together. Here, I’m collaging the window onto watercolor paper with matte medium. The blue transparent fabric on the left softens the image and implies water.

I use a brayer to get a good bond. The background piece is 140# watercolor paper.

I am weighting the composition with some heavier fabrics at the bottom. These two pieces are muslin that I created with acrylic paints, using stencils and resist.

I especially like this piece. Even though it’s a very simple pattern, when I painted the stencil I was working wet-into-wet, creating nice fluid edges on the shapes. I like the way this pattern can connote either rock-like forms or bubbles.

Now I want to add some transparent texture over the window to soften the edges and tie it in to the rest of the composition.

That’s as far as I got today. I will be adding some painted textures over parts of the surface, and possibly another recognizable object or two. I need to let thing s dry and look at it fresh tomorrow.

Collage Confessions (And a few tips)

I am getting ready to work on some collaging in the studio over the next few days. I have worked on several large fabric quilted pieces recently, and I want to collage for a change of pace. (I began creating small paper collages regularly a little over a year ago, and I was delighted and surprised by how much I enjoy them, and how much I learn from them.)

 To prepare, I pulled out one I've already completed to look at its parts and think about what pleases me in this process. This is “Windows to a Far Region”

MAGICAL BOND I collage thin materials: rice paper and fabric. (When using fabric, it is most frequently a thin sheer fabric, which has many  properties in common with rice paper.) Bonding these to a substrate is like magic. It is the most exciting and rewarding part of the whole process. I slather matte medium behind and on top of the piece I am collaging and then press it down on the substrate. If it's rice paper, I brayer it for a good bond. If it's fabric I use my hands. (**Handy tip at end of this blog) Aaaahhhh! The piece being collaged just melts right into the substrate. Whatever image has been printed (usually monotype) just “pops” with detail. There I am looking at delicate effects I could not create any other way. 

LIKE WATERCOLOR The imagery reminds me a lot of watercolor painting. When I learned to watercolor, I fell in love with its lightness and translucence. I have always found liquid, semi-transparent watercolor paintings more appealing than opaque acrylics or oils.

AREAS BLEND More magic happens when additional layers are collaged over the base layer. Just as the base layer has a magical bond with the substrate, a second layer will magically bond with layer one. When I work with paper, I like to rip the edges instead of cutting. Sometimes the point of intersection becomes completely invisible.

INFORMAL EDGES When I monotype print onto fabric or rice paper, the edge of the image on the plate is one of the most interesting parts of the image. I have learned to keep these edges as organic as possible. The edge of a brayer mark on the printing plate, for example, will make a wonderful and interesting image edge on the finished collage. When it's time to create the collage, I spend time looking for those edges to place them in an interesting place in the composition.

SERENDIPITY: As much as I have gained experience with my printing and collaging methods, effects are sometimes created which are a complete surprise. The lighter white lines within these squares are an example. They were more of a discovery than a plan. But I sure enjoyed the discovery!

In addition to large storytelling quilts, some of my next planned projects in the studio are mixes of geometric shapes with organic, based on the collage experiences. Creating a few of these smaller works is getting me into the groove.

Meanwhile, just for fun...

I want to brag on a new public art project in my hometown DeLand. A group of fun-loving and creative textile artists are creating tree wraps for downtown palm trees. There are now three wrapped trees downtown. Terrific teamwork: the City of DeLand supports and helps and the public art committee of the Museum of Art DeLand coordinates. (I enjoy serving on that committee.)  I am not part of the team creating these pieces. Just a citizen who can enjoy them — and brag on them!)

**Handy Tip for Collaging with your hands: Artists who are wiser than I am probably already know this, but it was a hard-earned discovery for me, since I just can't work on delicate collage pieces in any kind of glove, and I have spent many hours trying to scrub acrylic medium off my hands. (It's very stubborn!) I use wax paper as a staple supply in my studio. I place the wax paper over the piece I am collaging and then brayer or rub with my hands to create the adhesion. It's nice and thin and you can see through it to see what you are doing. It does not stick to the collage. Just peel it off VERY carefully so you don't pull off whatever you just added to the work!  Happy creating.

Three Projects Brewing in my Studio

Studio inspiration sometimes comes in spurts and sometimes In waves. I must be in a wave now. I have lots of ideas that interest me and lots of projects brewing. Here are three that are coming along in my studio this week.

PROJECT #1… The brown and black village: This will be the base of a quilt I am designing for a SAQA call for entries, “Aloft.” This is a 2020 traveling show, with entries due June 30.

The concept is two girls in a flying armchair in the sky over their village. Everything in the village will be dull, and the sky will be built of deep layers of brown. But there will be a magical element to the story – and that will be the splash of color. (I’m not ready to reveal yet.) I created a good batch of monotyped sky today, and I like the way it interacts with the opaque muslin of the village.

PROJECT #2…  “Overlooked.” Here’s the next stage of the girl in the garden with windows.  (I posted some about this piece on April 25 with more detailed photos of the sun-filled windows.)

 Now I have created the character of the girl. I was pleased with how her layers went together. There is an under-drawing on muslin, with some collage applique of sateen for her dress and sheer for the skin tone, and a little more top layer drawing with oil pastels and some acrylic washes. And I got her to blend in with the garden photos in a way that pleases me.

PROJECT #3… For “Perspectives.” This piece is what I’ve been working on for the Florida SAQA summer show. (Deadline June 1 for this one.)

 And, though I started it with plenty of time to get it completed, it has taken unexpected turns. I had a composition for this one and I followed the plan. But, when I got it all put together… well, it just wasn’t done. What I thought would be a completed work ended up feeling more like a background. The stage set, but no characters. So I’ve been living with it for a few days, and I just got the inspiration for the way to pull it all together.

There's Blue. And then there's BLUE!

I used to think I didn’t like using blue in my artwork. I am very drawn to warm earth tones . I love terra cotta and orange. (And I actually do have a real aversion to pale baby blue.)

Then, I took a look at my body of work. There it is: lots of blue. And today, working on several very different projects in my studio, I rediscovered the ranges of blue I use, and my reactions to them.

This is a fun series I created several years ago. I am updating the presentation. I had mounted these on birch panels with a raw-edge muslin fringe, which I later concluded was quite a  mistake. They have lived on my shelf for several years. There are four in the series. I really like the soft watercolor-like images of the palm fronds and the backgrounds. (All monotype prints on sheer fabric.) So I’m adding a punch of very bright color as a frame. (These are also monotype printed, but on cotton muslin.)

This in-your-face very very blue is an unusual choice for me. It can overpower everything else quickly. On this lighthearted series of collages, I think it works. I’m enjoying these.

A few feet away on my easel is a work I’ve just completed that is part of my series focusing on home and memory. Again, there’s lots of blue. And, some is printed on sheers and some on muslin. But so different from the fish pieces!

I’ve found my blue home when I mix phthalo blue with varying degrees of burnt umber, or — sometimes — raw sienna. This range of color is magical to me. It moves nicely into lighter, washy hues. It is wonderful when it’s heavy and deep. I also like this range of blues as a connecting color in landscape/nature-based works.

Two Unanswered Questions

The rhythm of printmaking by hand lends itself to contemplation. Once I am in printing mode, I find that I am both working with my hands and going elsewhere inside.

December 23 was a printmaking morning for me, and also a day of thinking. Thirty two years ago on that day my daughter was born. How has that passage of time and the accumulation of experience and memory occurred?

I do not write this in the sense of, “Wow! Time sure does fly!”  That, of course, is something we all experience.

I am wondering about the mechanism of memory and time. Are there specific cells in my brain which hold specific pictures and sounds? As all of our body cells are dying and recreating constantly, how, then, do we retain those memories? Where are they?

Thirty two years ago my daughter was a wonderful new being — warm, squirming, fascinating, and, as I realized I actually knew nothing about babies, a little terrifying. Today she is a warm and wonderful young woman. Such transformation, such experiences.

Exactly how all this occurs is my first unanswered question. (Admittedly, a large and vague question. The stuff of science.)

What to do with it is the second. (The stuff of art)

I take my artmaking seriously. I believe I am doing my best, most interesting  and most meaningful work when it digs at least a little below surface and aesthetic considerations and touches meanings or memory and experience. Each of us, when we create, is bringing to the work all that we are, all that we know, and all that we don’t know.

Can my work be both visually compelling and thought-provoking?

Can I create work that touches memory and experience in another person?

Does the work need representational subject matter to do that? Can abstract forms and colors communicate as well?

The unfolding and continuing of this second question is what keeps me interested.

It’s the Little Things – Some Studio Printing Tips

I had a great morning session of hand printmaking this morning. I realized as I looked at the completed images how the rhythm of printing and having a successful session depend on some  little things. These become like familiar friends. As I set up I get in printing mode

Acrylics on my worktable: I set out the colors I plan to use for the prints. I love these quart jars of acrylic paints with the nice wide, easy-access lids. Several years ago an artist  friend told me about Nova Color paints from California. I have been using them since, and they are also my primary source for matte medium and gel medium. (I buy these by the gallon.)  I limit my palette of colors kept on-hand and mix all my printing colors from these basics.

My favorite mixing palette: I tape down a sheet of white paper to the worktable and tape a sheet of waxed paper over that. I mix on the waxed paper. It’s economical and disposable. (And I can also monotype print from the colors on the palette at the end of a session!)

Printing plate: I print by hand from a soft gelatin plate. The plate I am using currently is in a commercial size cookie sheet about 18” x 22”. I mix my own, and use a recipe with glycerin so it does not have to be refrigerated. I have been using this one nearly a year. I also have a commercial gelatin plate I use when I want to have two going at once. Each has its own quirks, and you have to experiment with amount of liquid needed and amount of pressure.

Materials: Generally, I print on muslin, sheer polyester fabric (shown) and rice paper. The more delicate printing materials (the polyester and the rice paper) pick up more nuance and delicate image from the plate. The muslin will print with a more opaque appearance.

Hands on! I use my hands to press stencils and relief materials on the plate and then press my printing surface into the paint. Yes, my hands get pretty messy. But I’ve tried gloves and just don’t like working that way.

Here are a few of the images I created this morning. I’ll be incorporating these into a new art quilt.

The old neighborhood... (and the CHAIR - Part II)

Looking through my studio files today I found myself looking at this work. This is where life started for me and it’s the place of my earliest memories: a neighborhood of row houses in Baltimore. My family lived there from the time I was born till I entered second grade.

For those who have not lived in row house cities — Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston or others throughout the country — the neighborhood may need some explanation. It is not a tenement or slum. It is not a fancy affluent neighborhood of Brownstones or Townhouses. It’s just a family neighborhood. Each block has six to eight houses with no space between them, and then there will be one “end house” that has a side yard and a little bigger back yard. All the houses have street parking out front, no garage, and a small fenced back yard with a gate leading to the alley. The alley is where kids ride bikes and play ball.

As I worked to capture memories of home in my artmaking this past year, recreating the feeling of a row house neighborhood in fabric seemed like a good fit. I had printed a number of fabric pieces with lively colors and patterns, and they spoke to me of the varied lives and stories inside each home. I also created photo transfers of actual windows onto muslin, and I liked the mix of the photographic reality with the printed fabric. I added the suggestion of leaves and trees.

Like the neighborhood itself – the whole work is one large unified structure. But it’s made of all kinds of pieces. Lots of lives. Lots of stories

THE CHAIR – Part II

I’ve done a little more on my chair project to be auctioned at an event in January. (Chair creations by local artists will be a fundraiser for public arts projects here in DeLand.) Today I started some structural fixes. The seat had been cracked and glued back together. Extra reinforcement seems like a good idea. So I’ve sanded the bottom, cut a piece of plywood to fit the bottom, and will glue and screw it in place. I will probably cover all this with felt.  Next: Beginning the fabric printing of the upholstery.

Monotype Printing on Rice Paper and Fabric… What a great Sunday morning of printmaking!

All week I’ve had some monotype concepts cooking on the creativity back burner. Today was the day to jump into some spontaneous monotype printing — mostly on rice paper, some on fabrics, and all with acrylic paints. Among the many things I like about printing monotypes is that the results are just about always useful, even when they don’t fulfill the vision with which I begin. I can incorporate rice paper into abstract collaged paper or textile works and art quilts. This freedom means I begin a several-hour printmaking session with a nice feeling of enthusiasm.

Today I am inspired by a grey-yellow-white palette. Two pieces I recently created in fabric for my “Home is What you Remember” series used this palette. It’s not a combination I have focused on much before, but I really enjoy it. Mixing yellow and black yields some wonderful olive tones. Adding the white brings them into a subtle range of celery to gold to cream. And the delicacy of monotype printing lets those colors hold detailed textures.

Another thing I like about hand printmaking: it’s very low tech, but not limiting. It is possible to make work that’s gaudy and un-artful printing by hand. It’s also possible to create work that’s interesting and well executed printing by hand. It’s never really about the method.  The same is true, I believe, regarding oil painting, acrylic painting, quilting or drawing with crayons. It’s not the medium alone that dictates the value or content of the outcome.

This morning I ripped to size 8 sheets of rice paper. I am experimenting with creating more of the overall composition through multiple hits of a sheet on differently inked plates. Acrylics dry so fast! It’s not hard to put a sheet back down for a second hit almost right after printing the first.

At the end of my morning I had created a nice stack of images. Now I think I”ll let these simmer for a few days in the creativity cooker to see what mark-making, collaging, sewing — or something else? — comes next.

Did a bicycle just ride through my artwork?

Just a quick flash – caught in the corner of my eye… Did a bicycle just ride through my artwork?

A small framed rice paper collage hangs on the wall in the dining room. Because it’s under reflective plexiglass, sometimes window reflections appear to be in the artwork itself. When a window reflection included a biker floating down the street through the front window, it added motion.

I like that flash of time and change as a metaphor for growing with a piece of artwork.

When I invite a piece of art into my home, my hope is that it will be like a relationship with a person. There is something new to see and learn each day. My understanding of it may grow and develop with time.

I framed this small collage because it speaks to me. It was one of my earliest experiments with monotype printing on rice paper. When I look at it, I remember the process. I remember the building up of layers. I enjoy again the roots connecting the dark abstract shape at the top and the rocks at the bottom.

When I change, my feeling about this artwork changes. Experiences will move through me day by day, just as a bicyclist moved through the reflected window. Living with original artwork is an opportunity to experience emotion and meaning – as well as how those things grow, move and become something new.

Deep Down Roots… Where do they Go?

Deeply rooted in our homes are memories… histories…stories…   (Video below)

This work has recently been completed. I finished up the binding and backing. This gave me a chance to look at it again and remember some of what I thought about as I was creating it.

I am interested in combining realities. First in this piece is the combining of photographic reality with patterned monotypes. The photo transfer appears inside the house (the closeups of twigs) and also in the underground section (the pattern of water). I created patterns of hand-printed fabrics to be a visual metaphor for the richness and complexity of all that’s gone before.

The use of the spatial plane has also been mixed up a bit in this work. This functions in one sense as a landscape; there is a horizon line and the house has suggestions of perspective.  At the same time, it’s a flat plane, not a realistic foreground-background. I view these roots and all the underground patterns like a cut-away view, as if we took a vertical slice of reality and could see above and below at the same time. Yellow sky above. Patterned blue textures below.

This cutaway view then also suggests the passage of time. The roots are not reaching down into a static moment now. They are reaching into all the history and story that compromise the home.

I remember that I started this work when I needed an emotional respite. Just before this, I had created a work that is quite chaotic. Trees grow up and uproot homes and the mood is dark, like a fairy tale story. I felt the need for a new palette and was drawn to thee colors as a soothing change. But, as it developed, I began to see that the complexity of the patterns created an opening to more meaning. Some family histories are warm and cherished. Some entail secrets and hurts. The exact nature of the past is not defined at in this work.

Like real life… It’s complicated.

WATER - POWER - CHANGE - IN THE VERY SAME BREATH

“In the Very Same Breath.” Along with the rest of the country, my thoughts this week have been on water. Its power. Its unpredictability. How it can change everything. So my thoughts for this week’s throwback went to an image of water, and the concept of things changing in unexpected ways.

The physical traits of water are, to me, powerful metaphors of truths underlying so much of reality. A surface that appears serene may hide energy, interactions and swirling forces beneath. From the surface you can’t always tell. And water can change in immediate ways. It can spill over. It can be moved by wind. It can boil.

I am interested in simultaneous events and the way they add depth to our understanding of reality. Just as we are experiencing one scene, at the very same time – in the very same breath – other events are occurring. It may be in another place. Or it may be in the same spot where we are, but inside, or in the realm of memory and dream. This means the visible world holds more layers and richness than just what we can see. Exploring this in layers and textures is the heart of my artmaking.

Waking from a dream, remembering...

Have you ever awoken from a dream and felt that you could not quite shake the feeling of still being in it? I have found myself at times thinking back into the dream, trying to name the places and events it contained. My attempts at descriptive words never do justice. “Well, it was a forest, but not a forest really. It just felt like a forest.” Dreams are like that. In “Now Let the Night be” I have created a landscape that has that dream-like quality. It suggests a specific place, but it’s not really a specific place. The arch is a portal we can choose to enter. It is my hope that it beckons in a welcoming way.
