Projects Across the finish line

This week I’ve made it across the finish line on several projects.

FINISHING UP… THE FENCE PROJECT

Two weeks ago I posted about the quilt I was re-working to include a photo transfer of a fence. I began the binding on this one yesterday (at last!) which means that the main construction is completed.

I wish I had thought of this when I first made the quilt. But I am happy with the conclusion.

It’s titled “UNATTAINABLE”

There are several stories here. The young girl – depicted in a flat, paper-doll rendering, is contrasted the elegant ideal woman. That body and all it represents are unattainable for the little girl. (and for almost all women.)

For the elegant woman, there is also longing. Around her float the silver spoons that represent her understanding of what gives life meaning. (Although the silver is somewhat tarnished, and inhabited by a few flying moths.)

Together, the woman and the girl live in a house and the house is behind a picket fence. This fence was the last addition. I like the way its angle adds a new dimension to the composition. And, the fact that the fence is “real,” being a photographic image, provides some ironic contrast to the whole story: an imagined ideal home of a little house with a white picket fence.

FINISHING UP… THE CHAIR PROJECT

My second work-in-progress, which I posted about last week, involved the creation of a ladderback chair to insert into an imaginary landscape. Here’s the chair I ended up using.

Like the first one I made – which I liked, but which did not fit this piece – this one is composed of more than one fabric. But I used less patterns and a more unified palette within the chair.

The whole work has several sections, and I wanted a way to move from one to the other. Now I think the angle of the trees and the angle of the chair work to bring the water in the top right down into the composition, which is what I wanted to happen.

This quilt is titled “Listening to Water Over Rocks.” I remembered sitting on the rock next to the running water where I took this photo. I was interested in trying to describe the images and memories conjured by that peaceful sound, discovered in a place of light and shadow and trees.

FINISHING UP… MY WORKSHOP  HOMEWORK

Finally, I worked this week on updating and reworking  my descriptions and content for workshop presentations that I have available. I have had some wonderful experiences with textile groups and guilds this past year, both in person and via zoom. I look forward to more presentations in the future.
