They Never Told us Anything
52”H x 32”W
Building layers of paint, I built layers of words and memories.
I created this work as a whole cloth composition, collaging and painting directly onto a canvas painter’s drop cloth. I loved the rough edges of the canvas as I ripped it to size.
The layers are built from words I remember hearing: “We don’t talk about that at the dinner table,” “You don’t need to know that now,” as well as the unspoken words I remember speaking internally: “Why. Why not? When? Don’t you think we understand?”
I remember being this girl: surrounded by words but seldom given explanations.
