Once Upon a Time – Art Quilt

49”H x 56”W

Every good story contains both characters and a setting. Once upon A Time contains family members presented in childlike simplicity as paper dolls. The setting is a rowhouse neighborhood reminiscent of the one where I lived in my early childhood.

As in dreams, this scene is both real and not real. The people are not depicted in accurate scale for these houses. The architecture is imaginative. Shapes and patterns float as part of the surface.

Yet, as I look at the finished work, it feels quite real to me. It reflects my experience of being a girl, growing up and trying to piece together an understanding of my family and the world.
