Neither Up Nor Down              44”H x 32” W            $2400

Do you remember sitting on the steps, listening to the voices of the grownups below?

As I created this piece I remembered the experience of sitting on the stairs. The nursery rhyme of the Grand Old Duke of York made this a lighthearted game:  “When you’re up, you’re up. When you’re down, you’re down. And when you’re only halfway up you’re neither up nor down.” And I remembered the poem “Halfway Down the Stairs” by AA Milne, which was on the bookshelf in my bedroom.

These images of childhood and the experience of trying to figure things out speak deeply to me. I wanted to transform them into a dream-like feel, one that suggests the in-between, unrealized journey of a young girl. This work lived in my studio for several months as I worked on it, and I became involved in the scene, the story, and the character of the girl.

I like this girl. I find myself wondering about her—where she has been, what she is feeling I drew te girl loosely with oil pastels and added some painted highlights.

Monotype printed and painted fabric, oil pastels, fabric applique, machine stitching, collage construction. Art quilt finishing: fabric-bound edges, fabric backed, with hanging slat and pockets on the back for easy wall display.
