The composition compels the journey. Through the gate. Up the path. Home.

Of course, paths to home are never simple. One may have to traverse dreams, distances and memories. Creating a complex surface design was my way to speak to those varying experiences.

I developed new working methods in the process of this exploration of emotional territory. I created separate pieces of hand-printed fabrics, collaged and stitched as I normally do. (I have also included transfers of photographic images: the house, the gate, some of the trees.) Then, after the work was assembled, and after I had quilted it, I addressed the quilt as a painter’s canvas, painting directly on the surface. This, combined with the larger size of the work, challenged me and kept me very interested in the process. I was less able to predict the outcome and worked more intuitively.

This work is finished as an art quilt: fabric bound edge and fabric-backed.  The back has a pocket and slat for hanging display.

Techniques: Surface design using acrylic paints and stencils on cotton fabrics; collage, applique, transfer of original photos to fabric using acrylic mediums, direct painting on the assembled quilt, machine stitched construction and quilting.

This work will exhibit in a solo show of Bobbi’s quilts at the Museum of Art DeLand , Florida June - August 2026. It is available for purchase, with delivery at the conclusion of the Museum Exhibit.
