BETWEEN MAKE-BELIEVE AND MEMORY
39” x 46”
I can imagine the insistent pull within a migrating animal to return to its place of origin. I have felt similar longings. Having lived my early childhood in a row house section of Baltimore, I experienced a visceral response to this image of abandoned row houses in a downtown Baltimore neighborhood. Make-believe (my imaginings as a child) and Memory (the real events) live side-by-side, overlap, rearrange and conflate, creating a powerful emotional connection.
Row House Photo © 2014 Alana Semuels, as originally published in The Atlantic, used with permission.
Hand printed (monotypes and relief prints) with acrylic paint on cotton muslin, collaged and stitch construction, with machine stitched details. Transfer of photograph to muslin. Finishing: bound fabric-backed. The back has a hanging pocket and a rod, for traditional hanging tapestry presentation. All collaging is with archival matte acrylic medium, which is also used over the surface.
Between Make Believe and Memory will be included in a solo show of Bobbi’s work at the Museum of Art DeLand June-August 2026. It is available for purchase, with delivery to the buyer in August at the conclusion of that museum exhibit.
